Macquarie Business Banking has announced an important change to the payment methods available through DEFT.
From Thursday, 1 October 2026, DEFT will no longer accept payments made using credit or debit cards through the DEFT website.
This change may affect tenants and other payers who currently use a card to make one-off or recurring DEFT payments.
Why are DEFT card payments being removed?
Following changes announced by the Reserve Bank of Australia, Visa and Mastercard have advised that businesses will no longer be permitted to apply surcharges to card payments.
As a result, DEFT is removing its card payment option and focusing on fast, fee-free electronic payment methods.
Which DEFT payment options will remain available?
Payers will still be able to make payments using the following methods:
PayID
PayID allows payments to be made through mobile or internet banking using:
Your DEFT Reference Number@deft.com.au
For example:
PayID payments are generally processed in real time and do not attract a DEFT payment fee. Some banks may temporarily hold payments as part of their security procedures, and payments made on non-business days may settle on the next business day.
Payers can visit deft.com.au to obtain their individual PayID details.
BPAY
Payments can continue to be made through mobile or internet banking using:
- The DEFT biller code provided on your payment instructions
- Your DEFT Reference Number as the customer reference number
Please ensure that both details are entered correctly before submitting your payment.
What do tenants need to do?
If you currently pay your rent or another property-related account through DEFT using a credit or debit card, you will need to change your payment method before 1 October 2026.
This also applies to anyone with an automatic or recurring card payment arrangement.
We recommend switching to PayID or BPAY ahead of the deadline to avoid any delays or missed payments.
If you already pay using PayID or BPAY, no action is required.
Allow enough time for your payment to clear
Tenants remain responsible for ensuring rent reaches the nominated account by the due date. When changing payment methods, check your bank’s processing times and allow sufficient time for the payment to be received.
It is also important to use the correct DEFT Reference Number so the payment can be allocated to your tenancy.
